Welsh taxpayers benefit from the Welsh Rate of Income Tax, which allows the Senedd to vary income tax rates in Wales. For 2026/27, Wales has maintained the same rates as England and Northern Ireland — meaning a sole trader in Cardiff and one in Leeds face identical income tax bills on the same taxable profit. There is no practical difference in the income tax calculation for Welsh sole traders.

The Welsh Rate of Income Tax (WRIT) framework allows the Welsh Parliament (Senedd Cymru) to vary income tax rates in Wales by adjusting its portion of the overall rate. For 2026/27, the Senedd has set its element such that the combined rate matches the rUK rates: 20% basic rate on income from £12,571 to £50,270, 40% higher rate from £50,271 to £125,140, and 45% additional rate above £125,140.
This means that for the purposes of sole trader tax calculation, a Welsh resident sole trader is treated identically to an English or Northern Irish sole trader. The same income tax bands, the same Personal Allowance of £12,570, and the same rate on each band all apply. There is no Welsh-specific adjustment required in the calculator — selecting England and Wales produces the correct result.
It is worth noting that the Senedd has the power to diverge from rUK rates in the future, as the Scottish Parliament has already done. For 2026/27, however, there is no divergence, and Welsh sole traders should use the rUK/England setting in this calculator.
Class 4 National Insurance is a UK-wide charge and is entirely unaffected by Welsh devolution. A sole trader in Wales pays Class 4 NI at exactly the same rates as a sole trader in England, Scotland or Northern Ireland: 6% on profits from £12,570 to £50,270, and 2% on profits above that threshold.
Class 2 NI was abolished from 6 April 2024. Welsh sole traders, like all sole traders across the UK, no longer pay Class 2 NI. Only Class 4 applies, calculated on taxable profit through Self Assessment.
While income tax and National Insurance are identical, some other business costs and entitlements can differ between Wales and England. Welsh Government Business Rates relief schemes — for small businesses, rural properties, retail premises and others — are administered separately from the English schemes and may have different eligibility criteria, relief rates and application processes.
Some Welsh Government grant and support schemes for self-employed people and small businesses also differ from equivalent UK-wide or England-only schemes. These are not tax matters but can affect the net cost of running a business in Wales. The Welsh Government's Business Wales service provides guidance on current schemes and eligibility.
For tax purposes — income tax, NI, Self Assessment deadlines, allowable expenses and all other elements modelled by this calculator — Welsh sole traders are treated identically to English sole traders in 2026/27. The Self Assessment process, HMRC registration, filing deadlines and payment dates are all the same.
Select England/rUK (or simply leave the region at the default, which is England) when using this calculator as a Welsh sole trader for 2026/27. The resulting income tax, Class 4 NI, take-home and monthly set-aside figures will all be accurate for your position.
All other features of the calculator — the student loan repayment estimates, pension contribution modelling, payments on account guidance and expense deduction principles — apply equally in Wales as in England. There are no Welsh-specific adjustments needed within this tool for the current tax year.

Yes. The Senedd has the power to vary Welsh income tax rates independently, as the Scottish Parliament has done. For 2026/27, Wales has chosen to match rUK rates, but this could change in a future year. Check GOV.UK or the Welsh Government website for the latest rates each tax year.
Yes. Business Rates relief, grants and support schemes administered by the Welsh Government may differ from England. These are not income tax matters and are not modelled in this calculator, but they can affect the net cost of running a business in Wales.
